SYNOPSIS
"Mum’s Choir" is a very Kiwi comedy about a very
Kiwi family, a close-knit family who have their differences and arguments
but have all arrived at home after Mum has passed over to sort out the
family home. All the family can sing and singing is a required part of the
cast of this play, however they are not trained singers. Please note all
auditionees will be required to sing at the audition so please see the list
of required songs below, and all characters sing in groups and have solos
within the play. There is also a small amount of choreography, for which no
training is required.
CAST REQUIRED
Jean: Is the eldest, in her 50’s and has been
the devoted elder daughter nursing Mum to the end. She is a secretary and
lives alone in Palmerston North. The stalwart of the family but the cracks
are starting to show.
Noel: Also in his 50’s, Noel is the eldest
son. He is very creative and has continued the musical tradition more than
the others; Noel teaches music in Wellington and is very heavily involved in
choirs. Noel is genuine, calm, neutral, placid, everyone’s favourite older
uncle. Like Jean he has devoted a lot of time over the last few months to
Mum. Noel should be able to play the piano well and have a good knowledge of
music.
Cathy: Is the practical member of the family.
In her late 40’s/early 50’s, Cathy is the middle daughter and has taken on
the mantle of "organiser", and makes a very good farmer’s wife. She has four
children who have all left home.
Kev: 40’ish but still acts in his 20’s. Kev
flew the nest many years ago to a car yard in Sydney and has never looked
back. Being back in the family home affects Kev more than anyone. Kev is
married to Jude and has two children.
Terri: 40 but still the baby, Terri has been
mothered by both Jean and Noel and the tradition still continues. Terri is
happy-go-lucky, boisterous and pregnant with her fifth child. Terri is
married to Peter, who owns an orchard in Hawkes Bay.
Aunty Nola: Mum’s sister, in her late 70’s but
still rising early to do the housework every morning. Aunty Nola is a
lovable old lady who has great humour but is a bit vacant and forgetful and
occasionally says the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Matt: Cathy’s son, who arrives on leave from
service in the NZ Army. Matt is in his 20’s and is a typical Kiwi "bloke"
from the Army. He has a great sense of humour and duty. Matt’s ancestry
includes New Zealand Maori.
