AUDITIONS - QUARTET
By Ronald Harwood
Directed by Ricard Kelly
Sunday 6th April, 1:30p.m. at the Theatre
12 Spring Street, Onehunga
SYNOPSIS
Cecily, Reggie and Wilf are a thoroughly eclectic bunch of retired British
opera singers - each famous in their individual careers and also for their
mutually celebrated appearance in Verdi's “Rigoletto” - now living together in a
Kent retirement home.
Whilst contemplating an item to perform for the celebration of Verdi's
birthday, they are stunned by the arrival of Jean, the fourth and final member
of their famous Rigoletto quartet. Egos collide as Jean rejoins the famous four,
in this inspired production about the ageing artist’s performing dreams.
CAST REQUIRED
All characters are intended to be played approximately seventy years of age. No singing is actually required from the actors.
CECILY ROBSON - At times almost childlike, the quartet's mezzo-soprano is caught in her memories of the past in
India and listening to recordings of herself with the group.
REGINALD PAGET - Repressed and dapper, the tenor of the group is always taking the moral high-ground. He is still bitter
that Jean left him. Not always rational, he interrupts his reveries to Art to shout at a nurse who has deprived him of marmalade.
WILFRED BOND - Bored with his primary occupation of talking dirty to Cecily while she is listening to her CDs. The baritone
of the group is basically good-hearted, though not above fomenting a little friction.
JEAN HORTON - The thorny, one-time diva trying to cope with "ending up here" was never entirely in accord with the others.
Her retirement from the theatre was not by choice, having lost her voice many years previously.
