Woman In Mind
By Alan Ayckbourn
June - July 1996
SYNOPSIS
"Woman In Mind" is one of Alan Ayckbourn's blacker comedies, dealing with the
gradual collapse of a woman, Susan. The collapse appears to be
precipitated by being knocked unconscious by a garden rake. Starved of
affectionate companionship and understanding by an appallingly boring husband
and a priggish son who is ashamed of her, Susan conjures up her ideal family who
come to her in her idyllic (and also imagined) garden. But gradually she
loses control over these idealised people and their visitations, until she
finally breaks down completely in a nightmarish fantasy which mixes her real and
imaginary family in a confrontation from which she may never escape.
